Approaching the plains, Jonathan could not help but reminisce about his countless correspondent letters or love letters to his beloved Sophia. From the time he saw her in the Imperial Capital he fell madly in love, knowing that she was the one for him. No wonder when the opportunity arose to become Sheriff in Gasarag, he took it.
It was time for change after all; being 3rd rank at the barracks in Erwule was not his definition of living up to the Black heritage. After all his Great Grandfather was rather well known in the Imperial Army as the ‘Emperor of Lightning’ being an exceptional and some dare say prodigious Lightning Elementa user. Conquering many a foe and leading the Army and his squadron to great success. Thus put the spotlight on the black family, a role his grandfather gladly took up.
However his father ever the arrogant type decided to stray from the army and went into the wine business. Much to the disappointment of the family, nonetheless he rose successfully to attain high status. Frankly no one could deny he was a Black, his ruthlessness and determination in business and the wine market were exceptional. This led him to be in the top 3 wine suppliers for the Empire and Imperial Capital, specifically the army.
Despite this, Jonas Black always instilled in Jonathan to pursue what he desired. This was further driven home by Cheryl his mother, a water elementa who was the most caring and friendliest person in Empire. She was an ex-dancer who fell in love with Jonathan’s father, surprisingly one might add. But after getting pregnant she decided to make an honest man out of him settling in Erwule. Throughout his life Cheryl has made a huge impact on him, keeping the negativity associated with lightning elementa from excelling. So much so that she was the peacekeeper of the family, often quelling spats between the Black Men.
Thus it was Cheryl who had received the news first about joining the army and taking up the Sheriff spot in Gasarag in conjunction with marriage to Sophia Starfire. She was proud of her son and no matter what he chose, as long as he was happy, she was. Convincing his father would not take long, as usual his mother intervening smoothly. They knew this day was coming every since he was a child. He wielded his element comfortably and earlier than usual, no doubt his fore fathers’ genes flowing through him. Whenever his grandfather came over Jonathan would train rigorously with him perfecting his combat skills w/ lightning and swordsmanship. In addition he was ecstatic when hearing war stories, causing both Cheryl & Jonas to realize very early on; Jonathan would be an Imperial Guard.
Jonathan would excel through the ranks and would have been higher, if he hadn’t lacked experience. His lackadaisical approach to paperwork didn't help either. At the advice of his grandfather he would buckle and approach life seriously, especially given his ‘dislike’ for authority which was duly deserved as the Sheriff of Erwule was pompous and unnecessarily authoritative. Regardless of the past, he was here now on the path to his future as his own boss. A lot was expected of him regardless of whether people said this or not. Jonathan was not going to dishonour his family name nor disappoint his bride to be and her family.
As Jonathan reached into his backpack, he grabbed the canteen sipping on the barley his mother gave him. His horse was trotting at slow pace allowing him to drink with relative ease. Reaching forward on the saddle he placed some barley in his hands began feeding the Nadia, his prized mare from his previous barracks.
“Here you go girl...” Jonathan spoke caringly knowing Nadia responded well to loving to sweet words. “Sophia will be angry at me, if you are even a bit dehydrated.” The feeding process continued for a few more minutes before Jonathan sat up, patting Nadia before he did.
He knew all too well Sophia was anxious to see him and so was he. As he placed the barley back in his back pack, he kicked the stirrups ever so gently causing Nadia to spring to life with vigor. The light brown mare shot off nearly causing Jonathan to fall off, but he knew Nadia’s movements very well.
“To Gasarag Nadia, our future awaits....”
